Rice and beans may sound boring but there are literally thousands of ways to make them - depending upon the ingredients you have on hand of course! I Googled “a thousand ways to make rice and beans” and came up with over 150K links. Anything from sausage to tofu and any meats you might catch or procure in port will help. Naturally the types of beans or rice will make a difference as well. A steady diet of rice and beans will definitely make you appreciate other meals that come your way portside!

I am enjoying your blog a great deal. You are doing what the wife and I had planned on doing for years. Thirty years as a RN (25 for my wife) we were through raising the kids and we were leaving on Satori. Unfortunately I had three heart attacks in three years and those plans had to change. Pam and I have been following your blog and learning from it as well. So thanks a bunch! We noticed that you're getting philosophical in a 'stop-and-smell-the-roses' kind of way. It's the kind of spirit that you can only get when you have the luxury of not having a 'job'. Not that you don't have work to do. If you ever second guess what you are doing on this adventure (even with all of the challenges aka learning), think about the 1000 emails (not kidding) I have from work since 1 week of returning from Freeport. Needless to say, I am ready to come back sailing or sand surfing Mary Rose or whatever sport you want to try next in a sail boat :-)

Went to Round the World presentation by a family at Strictly Sail Chicago. They spent 8 years sailing around the world with two children. Top cruising recommendations:
a. Quell Shampoo (lots of it)
b. Make your own bread from eggs, flour, yeast.
c. Don't drink local water.
d. When another boat sends you two six packs of beer to cool because you have refrigeration, only send back one.

I am truly proud of both the Admiral and Captain in handling this situation.....it was an opportunity for learning....as I said before, the Admiral, Captain and Mary were all very well prepared for this experience...this is proof...be proud of yourself....you are better sailors because of it...and I just missed the opportunity :-)

In the past, when boats have been run aground on soft bottom, it was possible to place weight (people or gear) at the edge of the boom to heel the yacht to port/starboard. This usually gives us an additional 6" of clearance to motor out in the same direction one comes into the grounding. Your yacht may not respond to weight on the boom due to her overall weight. However, it still works in lighter yachts. Also, it can also work to make things worse depending on bottom conditions. Glad destiny grounded you while yet still at sea, plenty of roses to smell along the journey's path.
